New College Postgraduate Village

Overview

New College Postgraduate Village (NCPV) is a self-catered residential community that is home to 315 students of the University of New South Wales.

NCPV is a community where you can enjoy outstanding on-campus accommodation, benefit from personal and academic support, and make lifelong friends.

NCPV attracts a diverse group of residents and is UNSW’s first residential community designed specifically for postgraduate students, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and staff of UNSW. NCPV also accepts undergraduates, particularly those in the upper-years of their program.

NCPV is a place concerned with the intellectual, social and spiritual development of its residents. The College seeks to make a difference to people’s lives and instil a love for life-long learning. The cross-disciplinary environment helps to form people who are marked by an openness to each other’s area of study and research activities.

NCPV exists to encourage academic commitment in every possible way and aims to maintain higher academic standards than those generally required in the University.

The College is founded on Christian faith and values and so we seek to provide care and support consistent with our faith. We also provide opportunities for residents to express their faith and to grow spiritually while they are here. That said, we accept residents of all faiths (and none) and encourage open dialogue about beliefs and worldviews. There is no religious test to gain entry to NCPV.

The Master leads the New College Postgraduate Village community. The NCPV Dean Of Residents lives in the building and oversees the day-to-day pastoral care and academic support programs. They are supported by the Assistant Dean of Residents, and a team of Senior Residents who live dispersed throughout the building. Academic support is available from our team of Academic Tutors. Research seminars are run throughout the year to support our postgraduate residents.

NCV Residents enjoying 10th anniversary
NCPV residents represent over 20 nationalities

The community is culturally diverse with residents from over 20 nationalities represented as well as local students. Accommodation is usually for 48 weeks or 44 weeks a year. Alternative-length contracts are possible upon discussion with the Dean Of Residents depending on availability and the program of academic research or coursework being undertaken.

Every room is air-conditioned and has an ensuite, with a choice between apartment-style living or studio rooms. The apartments and studios are equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes. However, for those who would like part-catered accommodation, an optional meal plan is available through the New College Café (across the road) for lunch and dinner meals.

NCPV is an ideal home for students wanting a good balance between personal space and a strong sense of community. NCPV is far more than just a place to live and study, with many residents staying at NCPV for several years while they undertake studies at UNSW.

Common areas include television and reading spaces on each of the seven floors, a tutorial room, an outdoor rooftop terrace, a games Room and the Main Common Room on the ground floor. These provide plenty of space for residents to spend time together. A variety of social, cultural, sporting and formal events throughout the year foster a strong community.

NCPV is positioned on campus at UNSW and is centrally located, close to the airport (15 minutes), the city (15 minutes), Coogee Beach (5 minutes), Maroubra Beach (10 minutes), and Bondi Beach (20 minutes). Also close by, within a 10-minute walk, are a large number of restaurants and cafes, shops and parks, as well as the UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre a short stroll away. The main UNSW bus stop and the light rail station are both located just outside the College, making it easy to get to the city, airport and beaches.

Catering Plan

NCPV is a primarily self-catered college. However, we recognise that not everyone wants to cook all their own meals, so NCPV offers a meal plan through the Café at New College (our undergraduate college across the road).

Fees associated with the optional catering plan are additional. For a weekly cost of $88.00 (including GST), NCPV residents will receive membership of the meal plan. This covers 10 standard meals from the lunch or dinner menu. If you are not able to use up 10 meals within the week, your unused credit can be used to redeem other items from the Café menu including:

  • Barista-made coffee
  • Drinks, snacks and confectionery
  • A selection of sweet baked items and pre-made sandwiches, rolls, and other savoury items.

NCPV residents must pay the full cost of catering for any meal plan period at NCPV reception by the Thursday before each catering period commences. These payments will appear on your college fees statement summary. NCPV residents will receive credit on their student card each Monday morning.

NCPV residents can eat at the New College Café or get their food as take-away to enjoy back at NCPV. The NCPV meal plan is segmented into short periods that generally align with the stages of the UNSW Academic Calendar (totalling approx. 44 weeks).

There is a secure storage area for bicycles in the basement that is provided free of charge. Bicycles are not to be left in common rooms or stored in residents’ rooms. There is a charge for the parking of motor bikes and motor scooters.

Basement Parking

There are a limited number of parking spaces available in the basement of the building. If you would like to apply for a parking space, please talk to Reception. There is a charge of $20 per day for the use of these spaces and a charge of $77 per week for long-term rental where full payment is made in advance. Courtyards & Terraces

New College Postgraduate Village is a 7 floor quadrangle. The building includes two outdoor courtyards and a rooftop terrace with BBQ facilities.

Residents often enter and exit NCPV via the central courtyard on the ground floor. This space includes a lawn, gardens around the perimeter and some park benches. The lawn in the central courtyard is primarily a space for residents to read or work with their laptop outside. It is also one of the meeting places for large community events such as the regular NCPV BBQs. On occasion, the lawn is used to host games of badminton. A second courtyard acts as an event overflow to the Main Common Room on the ground floor.

A rooftop terrace is located on the 4th level of NCPV. It provides an outdoor area where residents can relax with friends, read a book or have a BBQ. BBQ facilities are permanently set up and residents can use them by placing a booking at the office.

Floor Common Rooms

The College has a number of excellent communal areas that facilitate interaction between residents. Two common rooms are located on each of the seven levels of NCPV. They are popular spaces for residents to meet for regular but informal suppers, as each common room includes a kitchenette. Each level has one common room with a television (with Foxtel and free-to-air channels), and another that is generally quieter and suitable for reading or private and small group study.

Games Room

The Games Room features a pool table, table tennis table, a communal kitchen, a student lounge and television with Foxtel. It is a popular meeting place for residents to watch sport and movies, or just meet up for a drink and a chat. The Games Room is located on the ground floor of NCPV and spills out onto a grassed lawn area in the central courtyard.

Internet & IT Resources

Residents of NCPV receive onsite IT benefits such as:

  • Unlimited high-speed (100mbps download/upload) Wi-Fi coverage throughout the College and Ethernet internet access points in every room.
  • Rooms are supplied with an Ethernet cable.
  • Scanning, photocopier/printing & colour laser printing within the NCPV Business Centre.

Laundry

A fully equipped laundry is located in the basement, with coin operated washing machines and dryers, laundry sinks and ironing facilities. Ironing boards are provided on a shared basis, but residents need to supply their own iron. Residents are responsible for washing their own clothes. The laundry is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Main Common Room (MCR)

The Main Common Room on the ground floor of NCPV is the main venue for larger community activities and events such as research seminars, creative activities, College Services and canapé events. The MCR may be booked by residents for large meetings. This is an alcohol-free area except by prior arrangement and approval. A kitchen is located at the rear of the MCR for food preparation. The room is also equipped with music facilities and an audiovisual system (including data projector, sound system and screen). Whiteboards and other visual aids are available.

Music Facilities

Residents who live at New College Postgraduate Village have access to music facilities located in the Main Common Room (MCR) on the ground floor. A Kawai GE-20 Grand Piano, an electric piano and an electric organ are available for use by residents who can play or are learning to play keyboard instruments. Residents who are musicians and resident musical ensembles may book the MCR to rehearse.

Reception & Security

Reception is open from Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays), 9.00am to 5.00pm. On weekends and after hours, a Senior Resident is on call to assist. The building has high levels of security. To maintain a safe living environment, residents are given student card access to operate the security door entrances to NCV and to lock and unlock their own rooms.

Study Spaces & Reading Room

Sometimes studying in your room all day can feel isolating, so there are a number of study spaces you can utilise around the building. On levels 2, 4 and 6 there are study spaces with good natural light that individuals or groups can useduring the day. On Levels 5, 6 and 7 there are some individual study desks, which look out over the Level 4 terrace.

The Reading Room offers a quiet space for group work at night. Please feel free to use and take any books that are on the shelves of the Reading Room.

Tutorial Room

Tutors use this space to conduct individual and group academic tutorials. At other times it is a common study space.
