New College has new and exciting plans for the future in the form of the New College Postgraduate Village (PGV). This project will see a 319 room post graduate Residential College built across the road on the corner of Anzac Parade & Day Ave. The Development Application was approved by Randwick Council on the 14th August and all contracts were signed on the 24th August.
The University and its students have received a significant boost to campus housing following approval by the Randwick City Council of a Development Application (DA) for additional student accommodation on Western campus at UNSW Kensington. This 319 bed project will provide a significant increase in quality accommodation available for post graduate students. The DA was formally approved at a full Randwick City Council meeting on Tuesday August 14 at 6pm. The final contracts were signed & exchanged with financial institutions, the builders (Lipman Ltd) and the University of NSW on Friday August 24 at 4pm.
Demolition of existing buildings on site will commence from Wednesday 29th August. The Post Graduate Village student housing development is located on the south-east corner of the western campus, on Day Ave and Anzac Parade, diagonally opposite the current New College. Completion of the construction project is scheduled for early 2009.
In announcing this PGV update today the College’s Master & CEO, Professor Trevor Cairney made the following statement:
“The formal approval of the DA and the completion of contracts is a big step forward and signals the commencement of the construction phase of the project. The site is fenced and buildings will be coming down this week, so its full steam ahead. The last two sets of green lights have been triggered, and we are now proceeding with confidence to build this unique new postgraduate facility.”
“I am confident that that while different to New College, the PGV will provide a great opportunity to expand and advance the mission of New College. I am pleased that our joint efforts of the College, the University and our builders Lipman have got us to this point. I acknowledge the significant contribution of the New College Board, senior College staff, the key staff of Lipman and the University of NSW senior management and Facilities staff to ensuring the project has now become a reality.”
“This project will see a significant form of new accommodation at UNSW and will because of its post graduate focus be unique within Australian higher education. Once constructed we will set out to create within the building a vital, supportive and strong community.”
