On Wednesday night, August 14, New College hosted Ultrasounds; the annual concert presented by the UNSW Medical Music Society (MMS). Ultrasounds concertmaster, May Gao, is in her 2nd year of studying medicine and living at NCV. May co-chairs the MMS alongside New College alumna Isabella Pak (NC 2016-17), one of the orchestra’s cellists. The pair performed Beethoven’s ‘Duo for Violin and Cello I’ and Arlen & Harburg’s ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’, with the remainder of the program showcasing music from various genres across time, performed by the MMS band, orchestra and choir.
Other NCV residents are also members of the MMS and performed in the concert, including Kiana Chan, Joan Sim and Tivona Thach. Alumni Yuji Nishitani (NCV 2018) and Xinyi Shen (NC 2014-18) helped make up the strings section of the beautifully talented orchestra. The MMS itself was established in 2015 as a means to enable medical students to continue in their passion for music and serve the wider community through charity concerts and community outreach programs. All proceeds from this year’s Ultrasounds were donated to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.
