It’s Prep Week at the New College Communities, which means our staff and students are busily preparing for the arrival of new residents in O’Week.
And for our pastoral and academic care teams, this week means lots of training.
Resident Adviser & Senior Resident Retreats
Each year, our RA and SR teams head up to the Central Coast for 3 days of intensive training. The program covers all kinds of topics, including communication, dealing with conflict, pastoral care skills, and self-care. Jenny Nixon, our Anglicare counsellor, also came along this year to deliver some of the training.
Mental Health First Aid
Another key part of equipping our Resident Advisers for their role is the Mental Health First Aid course. Over 2 days this week, students and staff from New College, Arundel House, Robert Menzies College, Morling Residential College and Warrane College came together to hear Stella Ladikos lead them through the material.
More to come…
And the week isn’t over yet! On Wednesday afternoon, Martin Healy will be speaking to SRs and RAs about ‘Managing Students in Distress’; Thursday brings a CPR and First Aid course; and Friday features more leadership training with the RAs and Academic Tutors.
It’s a full program but a vital one as we make sure we hold our Colleges to the highest standards of pastoral care and academic excellence.
