UNSW Kensington Campus

The main UNSW campus is located on a 38 hectare site at Kensington. With nearly 1,700 UNSW Express Bus services per week, coupled with several other bus, light rail and train services available, the UNSW Kensington Campus is easy to get to via public transport no matter where you’re travelling from.  A map of the Kensington campus is available at:  http://www.facilities.unsw.edu.au/Maps/pdf/kensington.pdf

UNSW Art & Design Campus

The UNSW Art & Design Campus is located in the heart of Paddington and is within walking distance of Central station and bus services. It is connected to Kensington Campus via regularly scheduled free bus shuttle services. Public Transport

From UNSW there are bus stops and light rail stations directly outside campus which can take you up to 20 minutes to:

  • Sydney Airport
  • Central Station
  • The Central Business District
  • Shopping centres
  • Beaches

Off street car parking is available in the UNSW parking area next door to NCV (subject to UNSW parking conditions).

Anzac Parade provides a range of cafes, restaurants, banks and plenty of other shops. 

A convenience store is located at New College Postgraduate Village (NCV).


Site Facilities

Accessibility 

Both communities have a ramp leading up to its front door and lifts providing access to all facilities and levels of the College. The College also has a limited number of accessible bedrooms and bathrooms/ensuites for people with disability.

Internet Access & Support

Residents receive onsite IT benefits such as:

  • 40GB of monthly data included with accommodation
  • High-speed Wi-Fi throughout the building servicing all students’ rooms and common areas
  • High speed Ethernet ports in all students’ rooms

Security

Access into the New College Communities is restricted by card access. 

Reception is open from Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays), 9.00am to 5.00pm. On weekends and after hours, a Residential Advisor is on call to assist at New College and a Senior Resident at New College Postgraduate Village. 

Main Common Rooms

The Main Common Rooms are air conditioned and installed with a data projector, sound system and screen. In addition there are data projectors, screens, lectern, white boards and other presentation aids. Seating and tables can be configured to suit your needs.

Courtyard and Common Areas

New College has an open-air covered courtyard in the middle of the connecting residential rooms. New College Postgraduate Village has an exterior grass courtyard and Common spaces on each level of the building have a small kitchen area, lounges and small TV.

Café

The café offers meals, beverages and snacks outside of the regular cafeteria meal times. It is an informal area for eating and relaxation with tables, chairs, lounges and cable television.

Housekeeping

Bed linen, towels and soap are supplied in each room and there is weekly housekeeping.

Laundry

On each floor there are fully-equipped laundries with a sink for hand washing, clothes drying racks and coin operated washing machines, dryers and ironing facilities.

Office services

Postage stamps can be purchased from Reception.

Games room

Each games room has a billiard table, table tennis table and a lounge area with large screen TV.

Pianos

Residents can freely play on the grand pianos in the Main Common Rooms.

 


 

 

 

Business centre

A business centre has computers and facilities for printing and photocopying. 

Main Common Room

The Main Common Room is installed with a data projector, sound system and screen. White boards and other visual aids are available. Seating and tables can be configured to suit your needs.

A kitchen suitable for food service has instant hot water, warming ovens, fridge and dishwasher. There are no ovens or stoves for cooking.

 

Common Spaces

Common spaces on each level of the building have a small kitchen area, lounges and small TV.

UNSW Bookshops

UNSW Bookshop has been awarded the Tertiary Bookseller of the Year award, and is not only a great place to secure textbooks and course notes, but is a well-stocked and excellent value bookshop in its own right. It also stocks software, computer accessories and UNSW Giftware.

The UNSW Bookshop is open 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.
It is located in the lower section of the Quadrangle Building on the Kensington Campus.

UNSW Security

UNSW is a safe place to live and study. As for any major urban centre, of course, crime exists and students should to take sensible precautions. UNSW Campus Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if it should be needed.

Personal safety on and around campus

A few simple precautions can considerably reduce your risk.

  1. It is best not to carry large sums of money. Try to pay large bills by Eftpos or credit card.
  2. If you carry a purse or handbag, hold it under your arm or in front of you. Never leave it unattended.
  3. If you’re using your wallet, put it in a jacket or front pocket instead of your bag, that way if your bag gets snatched your wallet is safe.
  4. If your bag or wallet is snatched, don’t forget to cancel your credit cards, Eftpos card and student or staff identification card. Also report it to UNSW Security and the NSW Police.

UNSW Medical Centre

University Health Service at Kensington campus is a medical clinic with Doctors, Nurses and visiting Psychiatrists and an Orthopaedic surgeon. Services are available for all UNSW, COFA NIDA and UNSW Global students.

The clinic has male and female doctors and a well-equipped treatment room. Interpreters can also be provided.

The doctors work closely with the campus counselling service, student services, accommodation providers, equity and diversity unit and international student office for students in crisis or with special.

UNSW Counselling Service

The UNSW Counselling and Psychological Services provides a free and confidential service to all students enrolled at UNSW. A range of services are offered to assist students to make the most of their university experiences, such as:

  • Individual counselling
  • Specific programs, workshops and seminars for skills development
  • Self-help resources so that students can help themselves to information and resources that promote wellbeing and adjustment to university life.

All counsellors are registered psychologists and have a strong interest in student wellbeing and development. The dedicated team provides a high quality professional service for students within the UNSW community.

Where is UNSW Counselling and Psycological Services located?

On main campus at Kensington we are just off the Basser steps on Level 2, East Wing, Quadrangle Building. Tel. 9385 5418.

UNSW Sport and Recreation

Living on the doorstep of the University provides immediate access to all of the University sporting facilities, including the Gymnasium, pool, squash courts, badminton and sports fields. The  UNSW Sport and Recreation is a department of the University of NSW.

Residents of New College are eligible for discounted membership of the University Gym through their membership of the Inter-Residence Council (IRC).

UNSW has many sporting clubs that field teams in different divisions making it possible for people of different ability levels to get involved. UNSW has produced many international sportspeople, several of whom have also been residents at New College such as the current coach of the Qld Reds Ewen Mackenzie and Australian women’s cricket captain, Alex Blackwell.

Although New College offers many sporting opportunities, some collegians choose to also participate with  UNSW Sport and Recreation Clubs such as the following:

UNSW Student's Association

Arc is the UNSW student organisation. The New College Students’ Association is affiliated with Arc. While the New College residential program is complete, the services provided by Arc are still useful for New Collegians, as members of the wider University body. New Collegians have been involved in Arc at every level in Arc.

Arc offers:
