START YOUR APPLICATION

There are more applicants than available places each year, so we recommend applying as soon as you can.

1. Apply using the online Student Portal

To submit an application for membership to one of our Colleges you will first need to create a New College Student Portal account. Select the term and community you would like to apply for, and then fill out all questions in the application form. While you will be able to express a preference for which community you desire to live in, and this preference will be taken into consideration, the Admissions Office in consultation with the Deans will ultimately determine which College you are more suited to, and offers of membership will be made accordingly. For more guidance on which community will be most suitable for you, please review our Accommodation Options.

2. Pay An Application Fee

You are required to pay a $100 non-refundable application fee in order to submit your application. This single fee covers application for both the New College undergraduate community and New College Postgraduate Village. The New College Online Application Portal is secure and online payment is protected by the ANZ bank.

3. Arrange Two References

As part of the application process you are required to arrange for two referees to send us an Academic Reference and a Personal Reference to support your application. Your referees can submit a reference for you by filling out a simple online form. Please be aware that your application will not proceed to the next stage or be considered without both references being received from your referees. Therefore your referees should submit the references as soon as possible for you. It is your responsibility to ensure your referees send the references to us in a timely manner, and it is your responsibility to chase them up if there are any delays.

Your chosen academic referee should be a senior person in your school, course, or university who knows your academic history well.

Your chosen personal referee should be a person who has known you for some time, e.g. family friend, doctor, sports coach, club official etc. ( The personal referee can not be a family member)

All information that your referees submit in their references will be treated confidentially.

4. Interview With The Dean

Once we have received both your references from your referees, the next step is to have an interview with the Dean Of Residents for the College you are applying to live at. The Admissions Officer will send you an email with a link and instructions to book an interview with the Dean. Applicants living in the Sydney Metropolitan Area and within 2.5 hours travel time of UNSW are expected to have their interview with the Dean in person at New College. Applicants from further afield are encouraged to attend an in person interview if possible, but where travel to Sydney can’t be arranged or if you are located overseas, then an online interview will be conducted.

If you are going to be in Sydney for another reason, or you have a scheduled appointment at UNSW already, then it may be possible to have an interview with the Dean and a tour of the College outside of the normal times the Dean sets aside for application interviews. To arrange an interview under special circumstances, please email the Admissions Officer at admissions@newcollege.unsw.edu.au or call on +61 2 8344 4500.

How will I know if my application has been successful?

Admissions occur throughout the year, but principally the period of August - December preceding the new academic year is the main admissions intake to College. A late-round of interviews in January are also conducted, recognising that many applicants do not receive their offers from UNSW until this time. However, places are more limited and competitive at this time. A letter of offer will be sent to you by email if your application is successful. In general, entry is a competitive process based on academic merit, social engagement and potential to help continue the outstanding culture in both our New College communities.

Once you receive an offer, you will have 2-3 business days to accept or decline the offer. After this time your place cannot be assured.

The number of applications to our Colleges each year are significantly more than the places we have available. Not all applicants will be offered a place.
