Scholarships

At New College we encourage all residents to strive for academic excellence, to serve one another and make contributions to the wider community. To assist residents to fulfil these outcomes, the New College Communities have developed several equity-based scholarships to support residents with specific needs or disadvantages. Scholarships also play a crucial role in the life of the New College Communities. They are important in reducing inequality, creating a level playing field, regardless of background and socioeconomic status.  Applications are assessed by the Master and the Dean Of Residents of each college in two rounds each year. Scholarships are conditional on College membership.

Access Scholarships

The New College Access Scholarships are designed to support outstanding students who have the academic ability and drive to thrive at UNSW, but have experienced some form of educational, economic, and/or social disadvantage that would hinder them from being able to attend UNSW and live at New College. Some of the contributing circumstances could include:

  • financial hardship
  • difficult home/family circumstances
  • rural/remote isolation
  • language difficulties
  • excessive family responsibilities
  • disrupted schooling
  • physical or mental disability
  • serious family illness
  • prolonged illness or condition

To be considered, applicants must have been accepted into membership of New College. An Access Scholarship is valued at the full cost of a 44 or 48 week membership for one of our colleges and includes full catering. The value of the scholarship would be reduced by a corresponding amount if the student should receive additional support via other scholarships or from Centrelink (Services Australia) under the Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy schemes.

There will be two rounds of scholarships. The main round will conclude one week after UNSW Open Day each year. The second round will conclude at the end of Week 1, Term 1 and scholarship support will be subject to a remaining balance after the main round award.

Applications must include the following elements:

  1. Declaration of whether they will be applying for Government support under the Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy scheme. (Please see https://www.arc.unsw.edu.au/help/legal-information/centrelink or the Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy guidelines at  https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/support/financial-help/centrelink-information.)
  2. Declaration of their own personal taxable income during the preceding financial year with documentary evidence.
  3. Declaration of total their parental income (where applicable) during the preceding financial year with documentary evidence.
  4. Declaration of their assessment of their likely fortnightly total Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy support in terms of both the main allowance and the rent assistance component.
  5. Declaration of any other scholarships they have applied for.
  6. Their most recent academic transcript (school or university).
  7. Confirmation that they have been given an offer of admission to either of our colleges.
  8. Confirmation that they will advise the college immediately where changes occur to these arrangements.

Dr Ian Walker Scholarship

This scholarship celebrates the lasting influence Dr Ian Walker had on New College. His lifelong dedication to education and pastoral care helped ensure residents had a smooth and supported transition to university life. Ian ensured New College wasn't just a 'a place' to live,
but a home and a community, where lifelong friendships and memories were made.

The Dr Ian Walker Scholarship provides a regional or rural student, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to attend UNSW and New College. Like Ian, the scholarship recipient 'is committed to making a significant contribution to college life’.

Value: Up to $6000 per year for 3 years.
